Our Father Abdul Ibrahim (Joe Hassan), who died on February 8, 2021, at the age of 87, was an important member of the Lodi community. Having lived in Lodi for over 60 years, his story is one that perfectly exemplifies “coming up from nothing”. Born near Jerusalem in 1933, Joe lost his mother at just seven months old. To support his family, he worked as a farmer until 1958, when he immigrated to Brazil. He was determined to make it to America and in 1960, an opportunity arose for him to come to Lodi. Joe had an uncle living in Lodi, who owned a dry goods store on Sacramento Street. After his uncle’s passing, Joe bought his business and turned it into what is today known as Joe Hassan’s Clothing and Western Wear.
Since then, Joe has been an active member of Lodi’s community. As an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and family man, Joe had many roles. His greatest pride and joy however was his store. There was nothing he loved more than working in his store, interacting with customers, and listening to their stories. He was a true people’s person and loved everyone. He knew and was well known to multiple generations of Lodians. He loved this country and even more so loved this town. He always liked to refer to himself as a “Lodi boy”. He had a heart of gold and loved to help people. He gave deals to everyone and would occasionally give free clothes to those who could not afford them. For the past couple of years, he was in failing health but he still came to Joe Hassan’s daily where he sat in his chair at the front of the store to see and greet people. He was in his store up until Saturday, February 6, only 2 days before he passed. He truly loved his customers and people loved him. His death has left a hollow gap in the hearts of all those he’s touched but his legacy will remain forever. He is succeeded by his wife, five children, thirty grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. May his soul Rest In Peace.
